A Vatican communiqué issued on Thursday said the nuncio will shortly be moving to Albania, but did not say anything about his likely successor.Archbishop Brown’s appointment by Pope Benedict in November 2011 followed the publication of four reports into clerical child sex abuse.
The Republic of Albania is a parliamentary democracy with a population of approximately three million.
In June 2009 the country held parliamentary elections, which the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) described as marking progress over past elections, but not fully realizing OSCE commitments. There were reports that police severely beat and mistreated suspects during interrogation and detention.
While the opposition Socialist Party (SP) voted to certify the elections as legal and final, it began a boycott of the parliament in September 2009, calling for an investigation into alleged electoral fraud. Some cases of physical mistreatment were reported in prisons. Government corruption remained a serious and unresolved problem.
Berisha, who is now seeking a third mandate as Prime Minister, expressed his full support for the LGBT movement in Albania and appreciated the activists for having given a voice to their cause.
“I have carefully followed all your actions and I think that you have, so far, responded in a very good way whenever that has been necessary,” he said, adding that “it is important to believe in the cause you represent.
